A septum piercing does not go through cartilage. It passes through the thin strip of soft tissue below it — the sweet spot — which is why it tends to settle faster than any ear cartilage piercing, and why the jewellery can be swapped sooner.

Getting the size right

  • 8mm fits most people. It is the standard septum diameter and sits close to the nose. 10mm hangs slightly lower and suits a wider nose or a deliberately looser look.
  • Check whether you are 16G or 14G. Both are common for septum, and the difference is visible as well as physical. A 14G bar will not go through a 16G channel without stretching it.
  • Front-facing designs need the right diameter more than plain rings. A decorated clicker that is too large will rotate forward and sit unevenly.

Common questions

What size septum ring do I need?
8mm inner diameter at 16G (1.2mm) fits most people and is the standard septum size. 10mm sits lower and suits a wider nose. 14G (1.6mm) is also common — match whichever gauge your piercer used.
Can you hide a septum piercing?
Yes. A plain horseshoe or circular barbell can be flipped up inside the nose, where it is not visible from the front. This is the main reason horseshoes stay popular with people who need the piercing hidden at work.
Is a septum piercing 16G or 14G?
Both are used. 16G (1.2mm) is the more common starting gauge in the UK, and 14G (1.6mm) is a slightly heavier standard some piercers prefer. They are not interchangeable — buy the gauge you were pierced at.
What is the difference between a clicker and a horseshoe?
A clicker is a closed ring with a hinged segment that snaps shut, so it looks like a solid ring and stays put. A horseshoe is an open U-shape with a removable bead at each end, which makes it easy to flip up and hide.
How long does a septum piercing take to heal?
Typically 2 to 3 months, which is considerably faster than ear cartilage, because it passes through soft tissue rather than cartilage. Healing still varies between people, and your piercer should confirm before you change jewellery.
