The three things being sold as gold
Solid gold is gold alloy all the way through. 14k is 58.3% gold, 18k is 75%. The remaining percentage is other metals, which is why "solid gold" alone is not sufficient ā it needs to be specified nickel-free and cadmium-free for piercing use.
Gold filled has a layer of gold mechanically bonded to a brass or steel core, and by convention that layer is at least 5% of the total weight. That is far thicker than plating and lasts years in normal jewellery. It is still a layer, and the core underneath is base metal.
Gold plated ā including terms like gold vermeil, flash plated, and PVD gold ā is a thin coating measured in microns, applied electrically. Vermeil at least requires a sterling silver base and a minimum thickness; generic "gold plated" guarantees neither.
Why plating fails specifically in a piercing
Plating wears from friction. In a ring on your finger that means a slow fade over a year or two. In a piercing it is worse for a specific reason: the surface that wears most is the post ā the exact part sitting inside the channel.
Every insertion and removal drags that post through tissue. Once the plating is breached, the base metal underneath is in direct, continuous contact with the inside of a piercing, which is a moist environment with far more absorption than the outside of a finger.
This is why plated and filled jewellery is excluded from the materials accepted for healing piercings in jurisdictions that regulate the question, while solid 14k+ gold is on the list.

Gold types compared
Titanium versus gold for a piercing
Both are legitimate choices for a healed piercing, and they are good at different things.
Titanium is lighter, cheaper, contains no nickel by specification, and can be anodised to gold, rose and other colours without adding a coating ā the colour is the oxide layer itself, so there is nothing to wear through and expose.
Solid gold has a warmth and weight that anodised titanium does not replicate exactly, holds fine settings well, and is the traditional choice for pieces meant to last decades.
For a piercing that is still settling, titanium is the more sensible default: lighter load, no nickel, and far less expensive to replace if the size turns out wrong.
How to read a listing
- "14k solid gold" ā solid throughout. Ask whether it is specified nickel-free.
- "14k gold filled" ā a bonded layer over base metal. Durable for fashion jewellery, not for a healing piercing.
- "14k gold plated" or "gold vermeil" ā a coating. Not for piercings.
- "Gold titanium" or "gold PVD titanium" ā usually anodised or coated titanium. Anodised is the good version; PVD is a coating. Worth asking which.
- "Gold tone" or "gold colour" ā contains no gold at all.
